Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is sex therapy like? And how long does it take?
Sex therapy is a professional talk therapy where you may bring any concern related to emotions around your sexual health and functioning, identity, orientation and sexual intimacy in relationship(s). Clients are initially seen weekly and may decrease to every other week as progress is made. Length of therapy often depends on the complexity of your situation and may range from a few months to several years. Most people are somewhere in between.
2. Can you see me for individual therapy AND see us for couple therapy?
In general, it is better not to have the same therapist for both individual and couple therapy. Although in couple sex therapy, I do sometimes see each partner for individual sessions, the majority of sessions are conducted together.
3. What if I’m not sure what I need - individual or couple sex therapy?
Prior to starting therapy, we will have a brief phone conversation about your needs to determine the best approach.
4. Does insurance cover couple or sex therapy?
Insurance plans generally do not cover couple or sex therapy. Read more about this here
5. Do you accept FSA or HSA cards for payment?
Yes, as well as checks and credit cards (Visa or Mastercard).
6. I’ve been to other therapists or doctors before. Can my situation really be helped?
Many of my clients have had difficulty finding a provider who can address their sexual health concerns. Through my holistic approach to sex therapy, we are often able to discover together solutions to improve your sexual health, quality of life and relationships. I am also willing to collaborate as needed with other therapists or medical providers such as Pelvic Floor Physical therapists or doctors to improve congruency of care.
7. I come from a non-dominant culture or community. Do you work with people like me too?
Yes. I welcome all genders, orientations, and relationship structures for compassionate, non-judgmental care. I have experience working with people from a variety of communities, cultures and religions from around the world. While our intersectional identity experiences may be different, I strive to continually expand awareness of my own unconscious bias. I acknowledge and welcome these conversations in therapy. If you have a particular concern, please bring it up during our initial consultation.
8. My faith is important to me. What if I’m afraid sex therapy isn’t compatible with my beliefs?
We will go over your needs and goals together and your values will always be respected as part of your individualized treatment plan.
9. What if I want to take a break, but I don’t want to end therapy?
Your therapy time is reserved for you and I cannot hold the therapy hour if you are not attending. If you wish to take a break, I do give priority to current and former clients on a first come, first served basis as new appointment times open up.
10. You’ve helped me so much I’m afraid to end therapy. What if I get stuck again?
As we near the end of your treatment, we will make a plan together to help you continue the progress you have made once therapy is completed. I often encourage clients to return for an appointment 6 months after ending therapy, if needed, to assess how things are going and fine tune your plan.
